- To use SMART EDIT 4 on Casablanca Avio, the system must be equipped with al least 64 MB RAM. (Despite the information in the manual, the Smart Rendering feature does in fact work on machines running with only 64 MB.)

- Changes in SMART EDIT 4 in comparison to earlier Avio and Kron system software versions (e.g. 1.10) and also SMART EDIT 2 and 3 are so big that the first (!) installation must actually be a full installation so all data on the hard-drive will be deleted. The installation itself warns the user about this. You may want to backup your work so far to tape before you start installing.

- If you install SMART EDIT 4 on a Casablanca unit featuring DVD Arabesk, a part of the hard-drive will automatically be reserved for DVD data. But this does not install the DVD Arabesk software itself. It must be re-installed separately just like any other add-on product in the `Install product´ menu from a SmartMedia card or a product CD/DVD.

- With SMART EDIT 4, you can install add-on software from a CD/DVD even if you haven't yet installed a DVD Arabesk software.

Questions regarding using SMART EDIT 4:

Question: After installing SMART EDIT 4 to my system's hard-drive, I can't find the hard-drive backup feature any more. Pressing the backup button on the unit's front doesn't seem to have any function.
Answer: Please install the HD-Backup software from the SMART EDIT 4 product CD. The backup functionality is not installed automatically when you install SMART EDIT 4.

Question: I have used the background rendering (Smart Rendering) feature to apply some special effects to scenes in the edit bin and now I can't find the rendered scenes anywhere in the bin.
Answer: Note that scenes that have been rendered in conjunction with Smart Rendering are always placed at the end of the scene bin's scene and not, as you may be used to, right behind the scene you applied the effect to.Go to the end of the scene bin and you will find all the new effects scenes created under Smart Rendering. Here's a tip: Once you finish recording and trimming your material, create a bright colour scene (so that it can be easily spotted) at the end of the scene bin and you will then easily find the `end´ of the actual scene bin and after it, the newly created, rendered scenes you are looking for.

All new, created effect scenes can be found just behind the green scene.

Question: How can I transfer JPG, BMP pictures and music from my PC to Casablanca?
Answer: You should use the program `Windows Moviemaker´ (it's a part of Windows XP) and simply `drag & drop´ the needed files to the Moviemaker timeline. The program will then generate an AVI file from this timeline, which is saved as a DV-AVI file and can thus be transferred via Firewire.

Question: I have created an AVI sequence using Moviemaker and would like to transfer it via Ethernet to the Casablanca. But I get an error message after the transfer is finished. And I can't find the new scene in the Casablanca's scene bin.
Answer: This may be due to an incompatibility between DV-AVI standards. Try to convert the AVI file into a DV-AVI Type 2 file using a free conversion program that can be found here for example: http://www.ulead.com/download/dvconverter/dv.zip

Question: I would like to record a TV programme using the time controlled recording feature. How should I connect the equipment for this?
Answer: The Casablanca systems do not have their own TV tuner technology (receiver), so you will require an external receiver such as a satellite receiver, a DVB-T tuner or a VCR. Connect your receiver to the analogue inputs of Casablanca (RCA or YC). Set your receiver to the programme you want to record and select the video inputs on your Casablanca to match the ones you connected the receiver with. You can now program the timer on the Casablanca to start the recording so that it can record at the right time. After recording has finished, the Casablanca will automatically shut down again.
